how to Format a Reference for a Web Site
Practice Formatting a Reference for a Web Site
Read the following requirements for APA References for Internet sites used in the Descriptive Essay. Look at the sample list of References in the boldly outlined rectangle. Then practice with developing an APA Reference for a chapter in the Occupational Outlook Handbook. You will have prepared one of the four References, which you could use in the Descriptive Essay.
For your Descriptive Essay you will add annotations below the References.
Format Rules for a list of Annotated References
Sample Annotated References for Web Sites
Title: Annotated References
Double-space, and arrange alphabetically
All lines below the first in each citation are indented.
Use career-related Web sites, such as those of professional organizations in your career area for the Descriptive Essay.
Use an organizational or agency name as the author, if no individual person is specified. Specify “n.d.,” if no date is provided on the Web page.
Format of a Reference for a Web site created by an organization (corporate author). Note that the title of the Web page is italicized, when the larger site is not identified.
A retrieval date should be omitted, although p. 23 of Bryant & Stratton APA Style Guide continues to show the older procedure of using a date of retrieval.
Organizational Name. (Year, Date). Name of web
page.Retrieved from URL
Remove the hyperlink status and underline of a URL.
Annotations, which summarize the content, and evaluate the sites with at least two criteria. The criteria used in evaluating each source are boldfaced, here, simply to help you see them.
Format of a Reference for a chapter or section in a larger Web site of a government department . Notice that the name of the larger site, Occupational Outlook Handbook, is italicized.
See p. 21 of Bryant & Stratton College APA Style Guide for an example of citing a chapter in the OOH. Drop a date of retrieval, which appears in the college guide.
Department or Agency. (Year, Date). Title of the web
page or chapter. Name of the General Web Site.
Retrieved from URL
No period is placed after a URL.

Annotated References
American Association of Medical Assistants. (2008). Medical
assisting career. Retrieved from http://www.aama-
ntl.org/resources/library/MACareer.pdf
The AAMA site describes meetings of state societies, a mission
statement, certification programs, and many other resources.
The professional association for my career is responsible for the
site, and so it is authoritative. The site has good currency,
because it is copyrighted through the present year.
Bureau of Labor Statistics. (2007). Nursing, psychiatric, and home
health aides. Occupational OutlookHandbook, 2007–2008
Edition. Retrieved from http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos165.htm
The chapter in the OOH describes the duties, working
conditions, job outlook, earnings, and related occupations for
nurse aides. The site is authoritative and objective, because it
is published by the U.S. Government, and it is free of
commercial interest. The source is relatively current, because it
was revised in 2006.
Instructions for practice with using a Web site:
Visit the Occupational Outlook Handbook on the Web. Place the keywords for a career or job in the box in the upper Right corner of the Web page following “Search the Handbook.” Retrieve a chapter from the OOH, which describes duties, skills, and the outlook for one of your possible jobs. Cite the chapter from the OOH by following the example, above, which begins – Bureau of Labor Statistics.
